Plan was tomorrow morning meet at the launch for 5 am... Well rain changed that plan to meeting at the launch at 5 pm today and fish into the night. The action started off hot hot. Larry got crapped on by another bird and we never looked back from there. Good luck, yea I think so. First 15 minutes of fishing I threw a heddon walk the dog lure and Larry threw the weightless mag fluke. On my third cast in bright sunny conditions I get smashed 3 times in 4 feet of water and hook up with a nice schoolie. I ended up getting 3 more on that and had plenty more missed blow ups. Larry started to get the hang of the fluke and with some small tweaks he got 3 fish in a short amount of time. Long pauses was key. We made our way slowing down to our spots and found everywhere we found fish they were in the chewing mood. Just before dark I tossed out a black bomber and every cast for a half hour I got hit at least once. At one point losing a fish half way to the boat and catching another one on the same cast. The fish were destroying it so Larry threw out his daiwa sp minnow and began hooking up as well. Multiple double hook ups and as it started to get crazy good the tide went slack and it was over just like that. At this point darkness was starting to settle in.
We have been on the river many many times but never in complete darkness that wasn't followed shortly by a sunrise, so we didn't know what to expect as far as the bite was concerned. I tossed on a black hogy 7 inch plastic on a jig and Larry threw a mag fluke on a jig and we went on to catch fish on an average of 2 out of 4 cast until we left. Anchoring in one spot produced over 80 fish alone.. It was crazy good fishing. I had no clue that fishing at night could be every bit as productive as during the day. We ended the night with between 160-180 fish easy. Including my third consecutive trip with a keeper. (29 incher) and a lot of fish in the 20/26 inch range. Tonight had it all .. top water explosions, vicious jerk bait strikes, lots of jig fish, tons of laughs, hi fives, and too much fun. Water temp is up to 50-51 and most fish were caught between 4-15 feet. Still no sign of these dam herring!! But it wont be long. I know i won't forget this trip for a very long time. Thanks again Larry! Your the man!
Took a long break from this blog after my father passed away in 2015. At that point going to the water was my escape and way of grieving. Fishing still helps me feel closer to him today. While i have some down time post op, i decided to jump on and check this out and possibly write a little bit again. A lot has changed since my last post, most importantly i am a father to a wonderful 5 year old daughter Autumn. Instagram will have most of my updates linked below.

Striper day with Larry Johnson .. Spring has arrived
After the longest winter i can remember of my life and more terrible ice fishing trips than id like to admit i've been ready to set some hooks and get this season going. Fishing has been bad for me the last few weeks with the largemouth only catching 1 or 2 here or there. Waters still cold and places id like to fish will not be open until Opening day.. But yesterday morning i met Larry Johnson at 5am for a striper adventure. We found a few biters
before the sun came up but nothing great so we headed down river a ways
and found a great bite for about 2 hours. I was able
to get 8 on weightless super flukes fished sub surface which was a
blast. Probably wasted a lot of time doing that but it was worth it.
Right before the tide switched larry hooked into a good fish.. One swirl on the surface had us thinking it was a keeper and sure enough it was. His new PB 30.25 inches. Once the tide switch the action was tough to find. Plenty of fish but very few biters. Ended the day with over 140 fish between us and if I didn't mess around with other lures it could have been even higher. Thanks for a great day Larry. Already looking forward to next time.
It wont be long until these schoolies are leaving the river and the big girls will be coming in. I think its already begun but its only going to get better and better as more herring make there way in. The top water bite in the early morning is such a small window but its so worth doing it. Watching a 34-38 inch bass inhale a surface bait is the kind of moments that stay with you forever. Cant wait.
